Gini Wijnaldum is already focused on Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford as Liverpool take on Manchester United.
Wijnaldum scored twice for the Netherlands in their 2-1 win over Belarus on Sunday. After the game, he took to Twitter to share his joy about winning and bagging a brace but added that he is now thinking ahead to Sunday.
The international break is over for Wijnaldum, who recorded back-to-back wins to move one step closer to Euro 2020 qualification. Holland beat Northern Ireland and Belarus to go top of their group.
Holland had Wijnaldum to thank for their narrow victory over Belarus. In a tricky away fixture, the Liverpool midfielder was the difference, scoring both of the goals in a 2-1 win.
The 28-year-old took his fine Liverpool form into the internationals. The 28-year-old has played 12 games this season, scoring once (the winner against Sheffield United).
Alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, Liverpool’s midfield trio has been dominant. The Reds are sitting clear at the top of the league going into the game against arch-rivals Man United.
Despite the Red Devils’ awful form going into this game, Wijnaldum is not getting complacent. On Twitter, the Dutchman said: “So great to pick up the full 6 points last week! Now it’s time to focus for another big matchup this Sunday.”
Wijnaldum has very swiftly switched his mentality from Holland to Liverpool. He seems fully focused on the task ahead as Liverpool aim to continue their good form against Man United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will be up for the challenge on derby day. But Liverpool have the ability to cruise this game if they play well enough. Wijnaldum will play a key role in this fixture – especially if he can replicate his Holland masterclass.
