Arne Slot will be pleased with the performance of one of his Liverpool stars despite being dubbed “horrendous” for his contributions against Southampton.
Alexander Isak scored his first goal at Anfield since his British transfer record £125 million move from Newcastle United on deadline day, as he opened the scoring in the Carabao Cup.
The Reds named a completely fresh starting eleven for the clash, handing a debut to £26m signing Giovanni Leoni, who impressed prior to being stretchered off the pitch in the final ten minutes.
While Hugo Ekitike continued his phenomenal goalscoring streak in English football as he scored the match-winner, the Frenchman will miss the Crystal Palace clash after receiving a second yellow card during his celebration.
However, one player who was actually dubbed “horrendous” on Tuesday evening actually produced a worthwhile display for the Reds.
Wataru Endo was a standout performer for Liverpool
During Sky Sports’ live commentary of the match, ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood slammed Wataru Endo for gifting Southampton a 76th-minute equaliser: “Endo makes a horrendous mistake!”
The Japan captain attempted to clear a Southampton corner, but his unmarked header was directed right into the danger zone, leading to Shea Charles’ goal.
Endo decided to remain on Merseyside this summer and fight for his place in Slot’s plans despite seeing limited game time last season.

Although he is likely to be used in a reduced capacity once again this year, Endo must make the most of the opportunities that fall his way, and he certainly did that against Southampton.
The attention, of course, will be on his error leading to the goal, but the midfielder won more duels than any other player on the pitch and played a pivotal role in thwarting the opposition attack.
Jeremie Frimpong produced his worst outing in a Liverpool shirt so far on Tuesday, and with several other players underwhelming at Anfield, excluding Leoni, Isak, and Federico Chiesa. Endo was one of the best performers.
Wataru Endo can build on his Southampton display
Stefan Bajcetic was excluded from the matchday squad despite recently returning to the first team fold following a long-term injury setback.
The Spaniard is expected to compete with Endo for the position of main deputy behind Ryan Gravenberch, anchoring the midfield three.
However, with Bajcetic still yet to make his first competitive appearance for the Reds since his cameo during the 4-2 win against Tottenham in 2024, it appears Endo’s place in the squad is safe for the time being.
And if the Japanese international can continue in the same vein as his display against Southampton, it will be a long road back to the first team squad for Bajcetic.
