Liverpool are among several clubs chasing the signature of highly-rated Wigan Athletic youngster Joe Gelhardt, according to reports last year from Goal.

Despite being just 17, the forward has made 13 appearances in Paul Cook’s first-team at the DW Stadium this season.

The Latics are still in the FA Youth Cup where they will face Manchester United in the quarter-finals, having already knocked out Tottenham this season.

Now it appears that Everton are considering rivalling Liverpool for Gelhardt’s signature, with The Sun backing the Toffees for a summer swoop.

Other clubs will undoubtedly show interest in the next few months given the immense talent that Gelhardt is showing at Wigan.

The starlet has one first-team goal to his name this season but his performances, on the whole, have been largely impressive.

Gelhardt is typically a striker and possesses blistering pace and immense strength for a young lad.

Liverpool can’t let Everton land the youngster and must do all they can to take him to Anfield.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has shown willing to unleash youngsters into his first-team this season and that should excite Gelhardt.

Having tasted men’s football at such a young age, that can only bode well for the future and in the next few years, he could well make an impact in the Premier League.

Gelhardt is an England under-18 international and has scored three goals during his six caps so far.

Liverpool won’t find room for the Wigan man immediately but his talent so far has indicated he could go onto become really special.

Potential

Gelhardt looks like one of the brightest youth talents in the Championship and it’s easy to see why clubs are circling.

He is powerful, strong and extremely confident given his tender years.

Everton aren’t exactly against giving youth players a chance and it’s fair to suggest that the first-team pathway could be clearer at Goodison Park.

Any player young or old would surely relish the chance to play for Liverpool, however.

Gelhardt only has to look at this season to see what hard work could earn him.

Curtis Jones has captained the first-team in the FA Cup, whilst Neco Williams and Harvey Elliott have both been handed opportunities to shine.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the youngster, but Liverpool shouldn’t let Everton win the battle for Gelhardt.
