Liverpool should join Arsenal in £10m Calero hunt to solve centre-back crisis

Spanish media outlet Cadena Ser reports that Arsenal are among the clubs interested in Fernando Calero.

Arsenal have recently lost centre-back Rob Holding to a long-term injury and they are now eyeing reinforcements at the back.

Calero’s release clause is around £10m, according to Cadena Ser, and that has sparked Arsenal’s interest.

Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla are likely to rival Arsenal for the Real Valladolid man.

But Liverpool should also continue joining this chase with their current options depleted.

Joe Gomez is set for a lengthy lay-off after fracturing his leg and then Joel Matip fractured his collarbone against Napoli in midweek.

This leaves Dejan Lovren and Virgil Van Dijk as Liverpool’s only recognised central defenders.

Amid this defensive crisis, Jurgen Klopp will be eager to sign a new player but perhaps reluctant to spend big money on them.

This is why Calero would be ideal at a price of about £10m.

The 23-year-old is relatively young and he has scope to continue his improvement at Anfield under Klopp’s watchful eye.

Calero has impressed in Spain, making 22 tackles, 27 interceptions, 29 blocks and 85 clearances in 15 La Liga matches, according to Who Scored.

This demonstrates that he is an all-round central defender with scope to get even better.

In the short-term, he could fill the void left by Gomez and Matip’s injury blows before competing for regular starts in the long run.
