Liverpool look set to miss out on Timo Werner, a player who has not only been linked heavily with Anfield over the past few months but openly spoke of his love for the Reds.

The 24-year-old has previously described Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as “the best coach in the world”, was flattered by reported interest in him from Anfield, and believed the Reds’ style of play would him (Viasport).

However, Chelsea now appear to have put themselves in position to acquire the RB Leipzig forward’s services, with Football London claiming the Blues are “highly confident” of activating the £53million release clause in Werner’s contract before it expires on 15 June.

That said, there is a player currently plying his trade for Red Bull Salzburg who plenty of fans have already earmarked as Werner’s replacement at Leipzig – maybe Liverpool should look at him and perhaps cut out the middle club?

The player in question is Patson Daka, a 21-year-old, 6ft 1in forward who has registered a superb 24 goals and eight assists from just 37 games in all competitions for Salzburg this season, including a staggering 21 goals in 23 league games.

The Zambia international, much like Werner, has searing pace, is great on the counter, is often involved in the build-up, has a lethal eye for goal and boasts great tactical intelligence.

Daka has stepped up in the absence of Erling Braut Haaland, who left in January for Borussia Dortmund, and surely it’s only a matter of time before he also makes a move to a bigger club.

Indeed, plenty of neutrals reckon he’d be able to take over from Werner were he to leave Leipzig:

Given the great relationship Liverpool have with Salzburg, Jurgen Klopp should get in touch with the Austrian giants and enquire about Daka – it could be a tough ask given his stock would increase further at Leipzig and yield a bigger transfer fee further down the line, but it’s worth a try anyway.
