Liverpool scouting £30m ace to replace star Klopp called ‘insane’
Liverpool are scouting Jonathan David as he tears up Ligue 1 with a view to the LOSC Lille striker replacing Roberto Firmino in the summer transfer window.
That’s according to CBS, who report the Anfield natives are one of several European sides with a keen interest. Lille also know David is in high-demand.
David enters the weekend as the French top-flight’s top-scorer with 12 goals in 19 games. He is also averaging one every 113-minutes so far this season.
But the 21-year-old is proving himself to be more than just a goalscorer at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. He also works relentlessly to help Les Dogues off the ball.
David is among Europe’s top forwards for the volume of pressures recorded in games. He is also alert to his teammates’ work to punish defensive mistakes.
The Canada international’s role in north France is similar to what Jurgen Klopp tasks Firmino at Anfield. The Brazilian plays an unorthodox facilitating role.
Liverpool eye new Firmino type to freshen up Klopp’s attack
David is additionally strong at creating chances for his Lille teammates, even though the Liverpool transfer target is yet to offer an assist in all competitions.
But his work off the ball is where David delivers the most in terms of creating chances for teammates.
His intent runs force defenders out of position and create openings for others to exploit. Opposition backlines simply know they cannot leave David unmarked.
One area where David still needs to improve is in the air, however. While the 24-cap ace is very strong playing with his back to goal, he does not win many duels.
But Liverpool will know David’s strengths and weaknesses as they track his Lille displays in view of a transfer to freshen up Klopp’s attack and replace Firmino.

Additionally, Lille believe they can fend off Liverpool et al’s transfer interest to keep David until at least the end of the season before considering any offers.
Les Dogues’ Champions League last 16 tie with Chelsea is a big incentive for David to stay this month. They play the Blues on February 22 and March 16.
David impressing against Chelsea could be all Liverpool need to go ahead and target the Lille striker in the summer transfer window to land Firmino’s heir.
Firmino has only started four Premier League fixtures from 11 appearances so far this term. He also has four goals and two assists over 435-minutes to date.
