Liverpool kicked off their 2018/19 campaign with a resounding 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United, with the performance demonstrating their strength in depth and highlighting exactly why some people are tipping them to run Manchester City close for the Premier League title.
Last season it was Mohamed Salah who rightly collected the plaudits for a fantastic season in front of goal but in Sunday’s curtain-raiser it was another of the Reds’ lethal attacking trio who claimed the accolades against a hapless Hammers.
Senegalese forward Sadio Mané was in red hot form as he netted a superb brace to pick up where he left off last season following his goal in the Champions League Final defeat to Real Madrid.
It wasn’t just his prolific nature in front of goal that deserved credit on the day and according to Who Scored the 26-year-old also completed 82% of the passes he attempted, demonstrating a willingness to maintain hold of the ball in the final third for the Reds.
“Sometimes it’s difficult to start the season but we started very well in pre-season, we won almost every game. We have started the season great and everybody is happy. We’re going to try to keep the same level and keep going”
The Hammers’ faithful must be sick of the sight of the former Southampton man too. According to Opta Joe on Twitter, Mane has been directly involved in six goals during his last four Premier League outings against West Ham, making him a real thorn in the side of the Londoners.
Mané can sometimes be an overlooked member of the Liverpool squad when it comes to dishing out compliments but having netted 20 goals from 44 appearances in all competitions last season it is pretty safe to say that he is an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
During the opening day contest the Reds’ team showed a real togetherness and it has to be said that given the recruitment that has taken place during the summer Liverpool now looked extremely well equipped to challenge for the elusive Premier League crown this season.
