After news emerged on Monday that Virgil Van Dijk had his heart set on a move to Liverpool, the Southampton Daily Echo claim that the Saints could report the Reds to the Premier League, over what they believe to have been an illegal approach for the Dutch international, potentially adding complications to a deal, with the two clubs yet to agree a fee.
It remains to be seen if the news will delay an agreement, though it seems likely that it will sour relations between two clubs, who have done plenty of business in recent years, with Ricky Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane all making the journey from the south coast to the north west.
Negotiations are also ongoing for Roma winger Mohamed Salah, and the Liverpool Echo say that the club will not be held to ransom if the Italian club are not prepared to lower their asking price and come to an agreement to allow the Egyptian 24-year-old move to Anfield.
The ex-Chelsea man is clearly one of the club’s top targets this summer, given that they have moved so early in the transfer window to try to bring him to the Premier League for a second opportunity in England.
There could also be a blow in the club’s pursuit of Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, after the German club’s Director of Football Ralf Rangnick told Bild, as reported by the Liverpool Echo and the Mirror:
“We’re not thinking about selling our best players this summer. There’s no red line for us. We will keep our team and improve it in several positions.”
The Guinean 22-year-old has been sensational for his Bundesliga club in his debut season, their first in the top flight, but Leipzig are clearly reluctant to allow any of their prized assets to leave. Keita is somewhat unsurprisingly one of those thought to be in demand, with Jurgen Klopp thought to be keen on bringing his energy into the Liverpool midfield.
