Liverpool will be subject to a two year transfer ban on academy players, report the Independent. The Premier League have made a judgement that the ban will apply for one year, with a further year suspended for a further year, alongside a £100,000, after they were found guilty of tapping up a youth player.
The ruling is bad news for the club’s academy and they will no longer be permitted to sign any youth player from the Premier League or the English Football League. That could give further opportunities to local players to come through the ranks, like Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
In another blow for the club, their Champions League hopes took a major blow with Josh King’s 87th minute equaliser after the Reds had come from behind to lead against Bournemouth on Wednesday night. Jurgen Klopp reacted as the club website quoted Klopp’s press conference, in which he said:
“It should be disappointing – that’s really important. But tomorrow we have to take it like it is, one point more than before. It’s not what we wanted but could have been worse, actually. That’s it. We all know we lost games like this already in the season and tonight we didn’t. Maybe we can take this as a positive and then drive to Stoke and try to do better.”
Klopp is clearly keen to move on as soon as possible and was looking for the positives as they at least avoided allowing the Cherries doing the double over them after their shock defeat on the south coast.
If the club can regain their confidence and continue to pick up points, they will have to do it without Sadio Mane after Klopp seemingly confirmed that the Senegal international will be out of action for the rest of the campaign. Klopp said, as quoted by the club website:
“Sadio is not involved [tonight]. I cannot say more than I said yesterday, but it doesn’t look good and that’s how it is. It doesn’t look at the moment like he could play one more game this season, but if somebody wants to surprise me with positive [news] then I am open for this. We will see. There is no final judgement. We have to wait for more assessments and then we will know more.”
The winger has been superb for the Anfield club this season but now faces a spell on the sideline with what is thought to be a knee injury, though the extent of the injury is still unclear.
