Liverpool round-up: Teen sensation targeted; defender injury fears; Matip discusses poor form

Squawka claims that Liverpool are leading the race to secure the services of 16-year-old Fulham sensation Ryan Sessegnon. The England under 19 international is facing interest from Manchester City and Tottenham as well as the Merseyside club, with the Championship outfit demanding at least £15 million for the left-back.

With four goals and two assists in 16 games this season despite being at such a young age, it is clear to see why he has caught the eye. The youngster is also capable of playing further forward on the left-hand side but is primarily a left-back, a key problem area for the Reds this season with James Milner converted to a makeshift solution.

Liverpool are concerned by Dejan Lovren as the Croatian seeks to overcome a knee injury which kept him out of last weekend’s defeat to Hull City at the KCom Stadium in the Premier League. The Mirror believe that the former Southampton man was assessed yesterday when players returned to training and could face further tests.

If Lovren is forced out for the clash against Tottenham this weekend then it could be a massive blow, with Lucas Leiva being far from convincing as a replacement in the defeat to Hull.

Another defender, Joel Matip, has been discussing the club’s poor form of late with only one win in 2017, coming against League 2 Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup third round. Matip said:

“Of course it’s disappointing. We tried to win but it was not enough. We have to work harder… We’ve all said it, not only the manager. We [will] try to get back to that level. We will do everything to get back to that level and play the football we played. It was not a good day for us, of course, but next week is the next chance. We’ll try to do better and get some points.”

Now, the Reds will be desperate to start turning things around when they welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Saturday evening.
