Liverpool could be set to reignite their interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze as a potential reinforcement in case Philippe Coutinho opts to leave the club this summer, according to TransferMarketWeb. Currently sidelined by an illness affecting his metabolic rate, the playmaker has failed to live up to his potential in the Bundesliga.
Klopp could look to agree a cut price deal for the attacking midfielder in an attempt to add depth to his squad with a player he knows and trusts, but he may be put off by the injury record of the former Bayern Munich man who has spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch of late.
Coutinho’s potential exit has even been endorsed by his national team manager as Brazil boss Tite as he told Spanish newspaper Sport that any club would want a player of the number 10’s quality as he gave his opinion on the rumours, saying:
“I don’t want to be pretentious and give an opinion on Barça, but who wouldn’t want a player like Coutinho? That magic, that capacity to invent and create something, that change of rhythm, the way he builds play… Look, if I was Klopp I would fight to make sure I kept hold of him.”
Coutinho was one of the club’s top players this season, both in terms of goals and assists, and Jurgen Klopp has already outlined his plans to make the Brazilian a key part of his squad in a more central attacking role next season behind an out and out striker.
Ahead of Monday’s Championship play-off final, Huddersfield boss David Wagner is believed to be seeking an agreement with his close friend Klopp to extend the loan deal for goalkeeper Danny Ward to keep him at the club next season, say the Daily Mail, regardless of what division they are in.
The Welsh international has impressed for the Terriers and was the hero at Hillsborough in the play-off semi-final last week as he saved a decisive penalty to send his side to Wembley.
