Liverpool round-up: Reaction to Champions League qualification; £12 million deal for Leicester starlet; enquiry for Monaco ace

The club secured Champions League qualification for the 2017/18 season with a convincing win over Middlesbrough on Sunday, after a tense first 40 minutes looked as though things may not have gone the way that the Reds wanted it too. First goalscorer Georgino Wijnaldum reacted post-match by telling the club website:

“I took a chance, to be fair, because normally goalkeepers think you’re going to go for the far post. I thought I would try to shoot hard to the other side. I’m lucky that it went in, because it was a chance that I took… It feels great. As a player, you want to play against the best teams in Europe and you can do it in the Champions League. That’s the thing we wanted to do when we saw we couldn’t play for the title anymore. We wanted to play for the Champions League. And we succeeded, so that’s a good team.”

Wijnaldum broke the deadlock before Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana added to the scoreline in the second half to see off already relegated Middlesbrough.

The club already have one eye on the summer transfer window, though, as the Mirror report that Leicester youngster Demarai Gray is set to have his release clause triggered with a £12 million bid from Anfield. That will see the Foxes make an £8.5 million profit only 18 months after signing him from Birmingham City.

Quick and exciting, Gray will go straight into the Klopp mould of winger in the Liverpool line-up and could play a crucial role next season if he does make the move to Merseyside in the summer. Any move is likely to be completed early on in the transfer window.

Another target could be Monaco central midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, as the Daily Mail say that the Reds have made an initial enquiry into the availability of the Frenchman, and are ready to pay the £40 million asking price that the French Ligue 1 champions are demanding for his services.

Strong midfielder enforcer Bakayoko is high in demand with Chelsea and Manchester United also interested and it seems increasingly likely that he will leave the principality on the south coast of France in order to move to England when the window does open.
