Liverpool round-up: Mohamed Salah alternative identified; Virgil Van Dijk move off; three way battle for Ryan Bertrand

BBC Sport claim that talks over a potential deal for Roma winger Mohamed Salah are stalling with the two clubs finding it difficult to agree a fee, and Liverpool could instead turn their attentions to Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins if a move for the Egyptian does collapse.

Martins, a 22-year-old Portugal international, plays on the right wing, like Salah, and contributed an impressive seven goals and 14 assists in 44 games last season for his club, including in the Champions League. With room to improve, he may be a cheaper alternative to Salah if a deal with the Egyptian cannot be agreed.

There had also been ifficulties in negotiations with Southampton over the transfer of central defender Virgil Van Dijk, according to the Liverpool Echo, with the Saints holding out for an incredible £75 million for the Dutch international. They Saints had, understandably, been disappointed by the defender making clear his preference for a move to the Reds, ruling out a bidding war.

Despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester City, it seemed inevitable that Van Dijk would have been heading to Anfield if he does move away from the south coast this summer. However, in recent moments, Liverpool have released a club statement via their official website, stating that they are ending any interest in the Dutchman.

They are unlikely to be too open to another approach from Liverpool either, but the Mirror claim that the Anfield outfit, as well as Chelsea and Manchester City, are keen on another Southampton defender. Indeed, this time, it is Ryan Bertrand who is catching the eye of the three Premier League giants.

The ex-Chelsea player, who won the Champions League whilst at Stamford Bridge, can play at left-back or as a centre-back, and has reportedly told friends that he wants to leave St. Mary’s and capitalise on the current interest, after establishing himself as one of England’s best left-backs.
