Dejan Lovren has been left behind at Melwood whilst the rest of the first team squad jet off for a mid-season break in Spain, the club have confirmed on their official website. Lovren is struggling with an injury and will remain behind on Merseyside in an attempt to overcome the injury ahead of the trip to face reigning champions Leicester City.
The Croatian will be joined by other injured first teamers, like Danny Ings and Marko Grujic, whilst a number of youngsters such as Conor Masterson, Harry Wilson, Yan Dhanda and Ben Woodburn have traveled with the team.
Former captain and club legend Steven Gerrard has claimed that Liverpool would have been able to win the league had Luis Suarez remained at the club, as he stated:
“There’s so many good teams in the Premier League but he would have given Liverpool a better chance. You’re guaranteed goals, assists, he just causes every opposition problems and creates a lot of space for the players around him. He’s relentless – that’s the word to sum him up. He scores great goals, all type of goals, he creates out of nothing. He occupies the whole back four by himself. He was an absolute dream to play with.”
Gerrard will be back on the Anfield turf in March as he will take part in a legends match between a Liverpool side and a team from Real Madrid, with all proceeds going to charity.
Now with an eye on the next generation, one of those not fortunate enough to have benefited from Gerrard’s coaching is midfielder Cameron Brannagan, who the Liverpool Echo claim will leave the club permanently in the summer after completing his current loan deal at Fleetwood Town.
The 20-year-old’s contract is set to run until next summer but he could move for a fee this summer, with the attacking midfielder hoping to impress in League One before the end of the season.
