Liverpool round-up: Klopp reacts to Southampton draw; Milner reveals left-back frustration; Anfield expansion latest

After yet another disappointing draw against average opposition at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp expressed his frustration having watched his side make it 360 minutes without scoring against Southampton all season. The German manager told the club website after the game:

“We were close, but in the end we couldn’t get the three points and that’s how it is. As everyone could see, it was a difficult game, Southampton played in a specific way. A lot of people might say that everybody will now play here like this, but it will not be like this and if it is, we have solutions.

“In the end, it’s all about finishing or scoring one and we couldn’t do this. It made life not easy in the game. We tried until the end, but today was one of those days. Now we have only one point more, we wanted to have three points more, but it’s not the end of the world.”

James Milner missed a penalty up against Fraser Forster in the best chance of the game as the Reds could not earn more than a point despite needing as many points as possible to assure Champions League qualification. Manchester United’s defeat at Arsenal means that their fate is once again in their own hands.

The club’s vice-captain Milner has also revealed how he feels playing on the left side of defence, having featured in that position since August when he first filled the role in a defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor. The experienced former Manchester City man told Sky Sports:

“It’s the first time I’ve played it in the Premier League and it’s not like getting to learn it on a Sunday with your mates. It’s a big change but I’ve always tried to learn throughout my career and I’ve played a lot of positions anyway, so it’s just trying to do the job as well as you can. But it’s about whatever is best for the team. Ultimately I just want to be out there playing games and contributing.”

It is clear that Milner is not a long term solution to the problem position and Jurgen Klopp clearly does not trust Alberto Moreno to play in the role regularly, so it would seem likely that the club will be actively looking for a left-back in this summer’s transfer window to compete with Milner.

Any summer signing will be excited by the club’s plans both on and off the field, as the Telegraph believe that they are looking to expand the capacity of Anfield to beyond 60,000 having taken average attendances above 53,000 with every home game this season a sell out after the Main Stand development.

The work on the Main Stand last summer has been a huge success, and studies have shown that Liverpool could easily attract crowds of at least 60,000 on a regular basis, with the club likely to look to cash in on the potential ticket sales.
