The Reds are also set to open talks with Leicester over a deal for 19-year-old left-back Ben Chilwell, according to the Sunday Telegraph. Today’s report suggests the English youngster, who is considered as one of the country’s brightest talents, has been identified as a priority signing in Jurgen Klopp’s summer revamp and negotiations are expected to start within the next few days.
Current starting left-back, Alberto Moreno, has largely flopped during his time on Merseyside, with his recent Europa League final display summarising his ability in ninety minutes. Abject defensively, the Spaniard is far from the player Klopp needs in his Champions League chasing side – I doubt many Reds fans would disagree.
With a startling role at Anfield up for grabs, this could be the perfect opportunity for Chilwell to make a name for himself, not only in the Premier League, but also for a big name club. Considering he has only made three appearances for the current Premier League champions, he would be a risky signing. However, if he lives up to his full potential, he could prove a gamble worth taking.
Reports suggest Klopp has been monitoring the 19-year-old for some time now, with Huddersfield manager David Wagner recommending the defender after his loan spell at Huddersfield this season. If the Liverpool head coach is willing to trust the judgement of his former assistant, then Chilwell could be a Liverpool player come the start of next season.
