The Daily Mail claim that Liverpool have placed an incredible £40 million price tag on the head of striker Daniel Sturridge ahead of the summer transfer windows with the club aware that the 27-year-old could request a move away from Anfield as he struggles to nail down a regular spot in between his numerous injuries.

Both Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham are thought to be keen on the England international, who has missed a number of games with a virus and a hip injury recently, before returning to the bench against Watford on Monday night. Whilst his future is not clear, such a price tag would suggest that the Reds are not keen to sell.

The club may feel that they need the depth that Sturridge provides if they do achieve their goal of qualifying for the Champions League next season, which they took a huge step towards doing as they beat Watford by one goal to nil to put their destiny in their own hands. After the game, Jurgen Klopp told the press, as quoted by the club website, that he was pleased with the display:

“I would love to see it [Can’s goal] again – everybody is speaking about it. I’ve only seen it once, but it looked already pretty nice… Of course, we didn’t train for a bicycle kick from Emre!… We have pressure, yes – but pressure in the end of the season, in this period, means you fight for something. It’s a positive pressure, so we want to keep this – we want to keep this pressure high, we want to stay focused, we want to work hard and do everything for the points we can get. We don’t expect for a second that it will be easy.”

Emre Can’s magnificent acrobatic strike proved the difference between the two sides, though Watford did go close very late on as Sebastian Prodl hit the crossbar with almost the final touch of the game.

One of the few negatives to take from the game was the injury to Philippe Coutinho as the Brazilian lasted just five minutes before being clattered by a challenge from Watford, forcing him to be substituted before the quarter of an hour mark. Post-match, manager Jurgen Klopp gave an update, as he told the club website:

“He has a dead leg, hopefully it’s not too serious but of course it’s really painful and no chance [he could continue]. Everybody could see he tried hard, but no chance.”

The Brazilian has been in fine form of late but was replaced by Adam Lallana, who himself was returning from over a month on the sidelines after picking up an injury whilst away on international duty with England.
