The Telegraph have exclusively claimed that Liverpool could face a transfer ban after being reported for tapping up a Stoke City schoolboy in their attempts to bring him to Anfield. The club are thought to be trying to negotiate a deal with the Premier League to limit the severity of the punishment.
The most likely scenario seems that the club will face a transfer ban on academy players, possibly suspended, and a hefty fine, and will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid who have all faced similar punishments for their first teams for such behaviour.
That would only add greater importance to the club retaining its key men, and the Guardian claim that Jurgen Klopp and co. are already beginning plans to enter into talks with 27-year-old central defender Dejan Lovren in order to extend his current contract which runs until 2019.
The Croatian is happy on Merseyside where he has been first choice alongside Joel Matip in the heart of a still shakey defence under Klopp. By getting Lovren to commit his future, it represents the club’s long-term planning to improve their position and challenge for a place in the Champions League and a title race.
Another key player for the side is Jordan Henderson, but the Liverpool Echo report that the team will be without their captain in the Merseyside Derby this weekend due to his ongoing foot injury, which has meant that he has already missed four games. Henderson was hoping to be available but now seems set to miss out.
It now seems that either Lucas Leiva or Marko Grujic will come into midfield if Klopp opts to retain the same formation with Adam Lallana also out of action, only further highlighting the shallow depth of the current Liverpool squad.
