The Liverpool Echo state that Jurgen Klopp is desperate to secure the future of midfielder Emre Can, despite talks over a new deal having been shelved since Christmas with his agents demanding wages in the region of £100,000 per week, more than doubling his current wages.
The German has been very inconsistent this season but is still a valued member of the squad by Klopp and the rest of the first team. The 23-year-old is expected to fill in once again for the injured Jordan Henderson against Burnley this weekend but Klopp clearly wishes to tie down his long-term future with only one year left on his existing contract.
A potential replacement for Can, or a competitor, could be Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, say the Liverpool Echo. The 22-year-old has impressed in the Bundesliga but is also now attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid and Arsenal after rising to fame in Germany this season.
The Guinea international shares an agent with Reds’ forward Sadio Mane, which could give the club a vital boost in their pursuit of the youngster who moved to RB Leipzig in the summer for £12.75 million from another Red Bull club in the form of Austrian outfit RB Salzburg.
Keita could represent a replacement for former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso after the 35-year-old announced that he will retire when his current contract expires at the end of the season.
The Spaniard, who won two European Championships and one World Cup, also picked up a Champions League medal and FA Cup trophy whilst on Merseyside as he made 210 appearances for the Anfield club, scoring 18 goals in the process. Having enjoyed a hugely successful career, the holding midfielder, who has a reputation for his superb passing, will now consider his options after retiring.
