Liverpool round-up: Brighton target Kevin Stewart; Mamadou Sakho injury wrecks transfer plans; Oxford’s Marvin Johnson scouted

Newly promoted Brighton could look set to launch a move for one of Liverpool’s fringe players in the form of 23-year-old midfielder Kevin Stewart, according to the Telegraph. The former Tottenham youth player was given a first team role this season but has failed to convince and has not appeared in the Premier League since September.

Liverpool believe that they can sell him for as much as £10 million, justifying their valuation with the value of Jordon Ibe when the winger was sold to Bournemouth for £15 million last summer, which could go towards their funds for this summer, with it clear that Stewart has no future on Merseyside.

That could be good news for the club, after Mamadou Sakho was stretchered off in Crystal Palace’s game against Tottenham on Wednesday night with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury which could keep him out for up to nine months, say the Liverpool Echo. Palace manager, Sam Allardyce, revealed:

“It looks like ligament trouble for Mama, but which one we don’t know. We certainly hope it’s not the cruciate but it could be the medial or the lateral. It certainly looks like a hyper-extension of the knee and we wait and see what the scan shows.”

That could have a massive impact at Anfield as it would end Liverpool’s hopes of selling the Frenchman for as much as £30 million this summer, which would have gone back into re-investing in the squad as they look to add depth and quality to improve their hopes of success next season.

That could mean that the club are forced to lower their hopes and expectations for some players, which would explain why the Daily Mail claim that the Reds are one of several Premier League clubs, including Everton and Leicester, to send scouts to watch Oxford United left-back Marvin Johnson in action against Shrewsbury Town in League One this weekend.

The 26-year-old has scored six goals and registered 11 assists in 51 games so far this season and could be available fairly cheaply, having moved from left wing to left-back this season after joining from Motherwell. Whilst it may seem strange to monitor a League One player at his age, Johnson has spent most of his career in non-league with the likes of Solihull Moors and Kidderminster.
