Liverpool round-up: All out for midfielder; Chamberlain deal to be influenced; talks confirmed for defender

Liverpool are ready to smash their club record transfer fee and will make a move for Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, say the Mirror. The Bundesliga side have placed a £70 million price tag on the 22-year-old, and the Reds are ready to test their resolve with a bid in the coming days and weeks.

Keita is the club’s top target in the middle of the park and Jurgen Klopp is keen to get his man as part of his squad strengthening project this summer. Keita could be keen on a move to England, even coming only one year after moving from Austria to Germany.

However, the Liverpool Echo believe that such a move would not affect a potential bid for Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. They suggest that Oxlade-Chamberlain is a separate target, not being considered as a back-up choice in case a move for Keita were to fail.

Given the wealth of midfield options, it could be hard to see how the England international could fit in alongside Keita and the likes of Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson, Georgino Wijnaldum and Emre Can. However, the Gunners’ midfielder’s versatility could help his chances.

Talks are at a more advanced stage over a potential switch for young defender Joe Gomez, who has been linked with a loan move to Premier League new boys Brighton & Hove Albion after over a year on the sidelines with injury. Manager Chris Hughton confirmed to the Brighton Argus:

“We’ve registered our interest but he’s not our player. It will be up to Liverpool. I’d like to think we are very much in the running.”

Jurgen Klopp may wish to bide his time and wait for a central defender to be added to his squad before allowing the former Charlton sensation to leave. However, regular game time would be of huge benefit to his recovery from a serious knee injury and his development.
