Liverpool face defeat in their pursuit of Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, say Goal. Having had two bids already rejected by the Bundesliga club, the deal is now considered “practically impossible”. With Leipzig bosses still ruling out any sale, the Reds may be forced to consider alternatives.
At present, it is not clear who they may be. Marko Grujic and Ben Woodburn have both been given game time in the middle of the park this pre-season but Jurgen Klopp clearly wishes to add to his squad. Now, he may have to decide whether to postpone a move for Keita until next year or move for another target.
One deal which is much closer to completion is one for Hull City defender Andrew Robertson. The Mirror say the Scottish international was at Melwood on Thursday for his medical ahead of a £10 million move. That fee includes £8 million up-front, with a further £2 million in add-ons.
The 23-year-old is likely to be announced in the coming days and meet with the squad when they return from their tour of Hong Kong. He will join new team-mate Emre Can, who was on an extended summer break having featured in the Confederations Cup for Germany only last month.
Another potential addition is that of Max Kruse, a 29-year-old striker, according to German newspaper Bild. The Werder Bremen star scored 15 goals in 23 games this season in a struggling side. The reports indicate that he could be available for just £16 million if he does move this summer.
The forward can also play as a false nine in the style of Roberto Firmino or as a winger as part of a front three, offering flexibility which may attract Jurgen Klopp. Chelsea are also believed to be interested in Kruse and may provide some competition for a deal.
