Liverpool reportedly want player that was compared to Xabi Alonso in 2020
Liverpool are reportedly looking to bring in a long-term replacement for the soon-to-be-leaving Gini Wijnaldum and have identified Rennes teenager Eduardo Camavinga as a potential addition – a player that was compared to Xabi Alonso in 2020.
Camavinga, 18, has earned the reputation of being one of Europe’s best young midfielders in recent seasons having broken into Rennes’ first team. The Ligue 1 side’s number 10 has clocked up 77 first-team outings, and even broken into France’s squad.
The fact he has three caps for France already proves just how much of a talent he promises to be. Goal have quoted his agent Jonathan Barnett, the man who also looked after Gareth Bale, as saying that Camavinga can go this summer for £43.5million.
Now, The Express have claimed that Liverpool are looking to sign Camavinga as a replacement for Wijnaldum – who is out of contract in June. Speaking to Marca last year, ex-Madrid ace Cristian Benavante – now at Charleroi – compared him to Alonso.
“He has caught my attention a lot,” Benavente told MARCA. “I would emphasise that he is always well marked when it comes to receiving the ball and moving forward and that, at his age, is very difficult.
“He does not lose the ball in congested areas, he is reliable with short, medium and long passes and, with the ball at his feet, he can break lines with his drives forward. He has an air of Xabi Alonso about him.”
TBR’s view – Camavinga a bargain at £43.5million
That figure is a bargain given that signing Camavinga could end Liverpool’s search for a central midfielder that does Wijnaldum’s role for more than a decade. He would be a stunning signing, even if that figure eclipsed £60million.
Liverpool certainly do need a younger midfielder in their ranks. Fabinho and Curtis Jones are younger than 30, while Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both struggling to remain fit and on top of their game. The others are getting older.
Jordan Henderson, Wijnaldum and James Milner are all above the age of 30 – so a younger midfielder is needed. Camavinga, then, would be a stunning signing – for a figure of £43.5million.
