Liverpool reportedly want player that Owen Hargreaves urged them to sign back in 2015
Six years ago, Owen Hargreaves urged Liverpool to raid Bayer Leverkusen and sign playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu. Fast forward until now, and the Reds are finally heeding the advice given to them from Hargreaves – with reports claiming the Reds have opened talks to sign the Turkish star.
The German-born midfielder has been in sensational form during the 2020-21 campaign. Helping Milan return to the Champions League and finish in second place in the Serie A table – Calhanoglu had a hand in 21 goals in all competitions. Scoring nine goals and creating 12 more, he has been superb.
Lethal from free-kicks and corners, and capable of producing goals from nothing, Calhanoglu is set to leave Milan. He will depart with his contract ending in June, and CalcioMercato say Liverpool have opened talks.
Available on a free, Calhanoglu could be a brilliant addition for the Reds. Especially because Liverpool were urged to sign the attacking midfielder back in 2015 by ex-Man United man Hargreaves. He told BT Sport, as per Bleacher Report, that Liverpool and Tottenham would be ideal for him.
“Calhanoglu is the star he is the feature of this team,” Hargreaves claimed in 2015. “If you think about Liverpool or Tottenham he would be perfect in those teams. I love Calhanoglu, I think he’s gonna be a superstar. Honestly he’s one of the best strikers of the ball you’ll see.”
Calhanoglu adds something that Liverpool currently lack – with or without Wijnaldum…
The midfielder has been absolutely sensational this season. But despite qualification for the Champions League, it looks as if he will leave Milan in the coming months. Juventus and Liverpool are keen and that means he will remain in the Champions League. But the Reds really need him.
That is because they have always lacked a player like him under Klopp. Wijnaldum scored the odd goal, but no central midfielder during Klopp’s reign scores and creates like Calhanoglu. Liverpool desperately need to add the attacking midfielder to their side – especially as he is available on a free.
