Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo and could land the Italian wonderkid as part of a player-plus-cash deal – and Alberto Aquilani has recently made a big prediction about the youngster.
Still only 20 years of age, Zaniolo is quickly becoming regarded as one of Europe’s best up-and-coming prospects as he continues to shine for one of Italy’s biggest clubs. Indeed, he has already played 60 times for Roma.
Indeed, this season, Zaniolo has even broken into the Italy side and scored six times in 24 Roma outings. Italian outlet Il Sussadiario have claimed that Liverpool could sign Zaniolo in a player-plus-cash deal – with Dejan Lovren going to Roma.
Aquilani came through the ranks at Roma before his £18million move to Liverpool in 2009 – and he told website Il Romanista earlier this year that Zaniolo has the potential to become a “champion”.
“He is a potential champion,”Aquilani said. “He has unusual leg strength for a player of his age. He impressed me from the start. You can’t see the differences between him and the more experienced players.
“When you have these innate qualities it is easier for you. That strength that he has is genetic that probably comes from his father, you don’t learn that. In my opinion, he needs continuity with more goals and assists, plus decisive game time.”
TBR’s view – Zaniolo would be a stunning addition
Not only is he young and has enormous resale value – and the potential to become one of Europe’s best players, but the versatile Zaniolo has the kind of quality that can improve Liverpool right now, and in a number of positions.
Naturally a box-to-box midfielder, Zaniolo would be another form of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the ideal replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri – who has been linked with Newcastle. A no-brainer, if a deal is possible.
