Liverpool reportedly want £40m star Rodgers said has a 'wonderful footballing brain'
Reports emerged on Thursday that Liverpool are battling Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona in the race to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer – and Brendan Rodgers’ verdict on him from March will excite fans.
Tielemans, 24, has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League – since joining the club initially on loan from Monaco in January 2019. He starred in his first six months, and earned a permanent move.
He cost Leicester £40million (Mail) but it has been money well spent. Already, the Belgium international has played 107 times for the Foxes in all competitions – having a hand in 36 goals. His latest goal was easily his most important.
Picking the ball up 35 yards from goal against Wembley, he got the ball out of his feet before driving an effort into the top corner against Chelsea to win the FA Cup. Now, Liverpool are reportedly interested.
That is according to CalcioMercato. They site state that Leicester are trying to tie him down to a new deal but that Liverpool and Barcelona are lurking – and a verdict on Tielemans from Rodgers in March will excite Liverpool fans.
“He is 23 years of age but you’d think he was 28 or 29,” Rodgers told Sky Sports in March. “He has got a wonderful football brain. I trust him. Tactically, he is so strong. Technically, he can play fast because his vision is so good.”
TBR’s view – Tielemans would be a stunning Liverpool signing
Liverpool need an attacking midfielder. Yes, Thiago scored recently and yes, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted against Burnley. But the Reds lack that midfielder that has the engine to get up and down – attack and be an engine.
Thiago is more of a defensive player, Oxlade-Chamberlain is injury prone, Naby Keita and Gini Wijnaldum could both leave this summer. Liverpool need a box-to-box midfielder with goals and assists and Tielemans is perfect.
