Liverpool reportedly want £22m star that said playing at Anfield is like a ‘dream’

Liverpool are reportedly interested in raiding soon-to-be relegated Sheffield United for midfielder Sander Berge this summer, and the Norwegian’s comments will intrigue Liverpool supporters over a potential move for the impressive star.

Berge, 23, has certainly caught the eye since joining Sheffield United in January 2020. His £22million move to Bramall Lane was pivotal in helping the Blades continue their stunning 2019-20 form – which saw them finish in the top half of the table.

However, Sheffield United are now 14 points adrift and are expected to be relegated this season. It is likely to see a number of players depart – with Berge at the top of that pile and Eurosport claim Liverpool have joined Aston Villa in the race for Barge.

The report states that Berge is looking to leave and Liverpool want a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, who is out of contract in June. Back in 2019, Berge labelled playing at Anfield a “dream” – having played there with Genk in the Champions League.

“laying at Anfield is a dream for everyone in the world, and not least for Norwegians,” Berge told TV2. “Liverpool are the best team and has the most fans. So I could definitely plan to play at Anfield as often as possible.”

TBR’s view – Berge different to Wijnaldum

While Berge fits the Liverpool ethos of central midfielders of being hard-working and defensively-minded, Wijnaldum is capable of scoring goals, and important ones, somewhat out of nothing. Berge is slightly more defensive.

While Berge would be a top addition and good cover for the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, replacing Wijnaldum should still be something that needs attention. Berge and another midfielder would be good work by the Liverpool board this summer.
