Liverpool reportedly table offer for 27-year-old that Kuyt wanted at Anfield in 2015

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Lyon captain Memphis Depay this summer and are said to have made an offer to land him on a free transfer – something Dirk Kuyt wanted his old side to do back in 2015.

Depay, 27, has been in stunning form for Lyon this season – having a hand in 24 goals during his 31 league and cup appearances. He has scored 15 goals and created nine more, despite recently coming back from a knee injury.

He has incredible stats from his time at Lyon. The winger has scored 69 goals and laid on 52 assists during his 169 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side – but is out of contract at the end of the season with Lyon.

Spanish newspaper Marca claim that Liverpool have made an offer to sign Depay – but they are not alone in their pursuit, with Barcelona and Juventus also making offers. Kuyt, back in 2015, urged him to sign for Liverpool.

“I look through red glasses, because I’ve played six years for Liverpool. Only when Memphis does that, he will realize how big Liverpool are,” Kuyt said when quoted by Goal in 2015. Depay eventually chose to join Manchester United.

TBR’s view – Depay would be a stunning Liverpool signing

On a free, it really is a no-brainer. It would give Liverpool a player that is as good as Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, if not better, and one that can also provide cover in the number 10 role – where Roberto Firmino operates.

Looking past his decision to join Manchester United, Liverpool would be nabbing themselves the bargain of the summer window and would be able to throw their name into next season’s title race should a move be completed.
