Liverpool are set to offer new contracts to Joel Matip and James Milner following tomorrow’s Champions League final, according to the Daily Mail.
They report that both men have just a year left on their current Anfield deals and will be offered fresh terms once the Madrid showpiece against Tottenham is out of the way.
The duo both initially came to the club on free transfers, from Schalke and Manchester City respectively, and have been shrewd business in a rapidly inflating transfer market.
The report says that Milner had been linked with a return to his boyhood club Leeds United. But after the Whites failed to earn promotion to the top flight, this new deal would apparently end the already slim chances.
Both men have had their critics in their careers. Milner was deemed a functional and boring player for much of his time with Manchester City and England – but his career has had a second wind since his international retirement.
Questions have been asked of Matip’s ability to partner Virgil van Dijk but in the absence of Joe Gomez, he has stepped up so impressively in the closing weeks of the season and will expect to start tomorrow’s game.
