Liverpool reportedly in talks over £34m forward inspired by Bergkamp, fans should be buzzing - TBR View
Liverpool fans should be excited about reports claiming the Reds are in talks over Donyell Malen.
Voetbal International have claimed on their official YouTube channel that Liverpool have made their move for the PSV and Netherlands ace.
Malen’s agent, Mino Raiola, is apparently discussing a move with the Anfield side for the 22-year-old, along with Borussia Dortmund.
“There are negotiations going on, and with that, it can also be counted on the negotiations that in this case, Mino Raiola is conducting with Dortmund or Liverpool, for example, for Malen,” said VI journalist Marco Timmer, as transcribed by Sports Witness.
So, why should Liverpool fans be excited about reports suggesting Michael Edwards is in talks over Malen?
First of all, his stats. Last season was especially fruitful for him, with 27 goals and 10 assists from 45 appearances in all competitions.
Malen’s style of play would also light up Anfield, with 90Min going into detail in 2019.
“With guile and electric footwork, Malen offers a different option to normal number nines,” they wrote.
“He is excellent at keeping hold of possession, not through sheer strength, but with superb technique and ball control.
“However, just as is expected of Dutch number nines, he is also effective at dropping deeper and linking midfield and attack, possessing the creative touch that is a quintessential trait for Dutch strikers.”
Inspired by Bergkamp, similar to Sanchez
Earlier in Malen’s career, his then-Ajax U14 coach Brian Tevreden likened him to Alexis Sanchez.
“It’s hard to describe him,” FourFourTwo quoted him as saying.
“If I have to compare him with a player in the Premier League, he seems a bit like Alexis Sanchez.”
Malen is inspired by Dutch legend Dennis Bergkamp and reportedly declined offers from Manchester United and Chelsea to join Arsenal, his idol’s former club.
But despite shining at age level for the Gunners, they ended up selling him to PSV for a reported £500,000.
Eurosport reported last month that Malen now commands a £34million price tag.
