Liverpool landing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid would see Klopp get dream defensive partnership

Liverpool are firmly in the hunt to lay their hands on a Premier League and Champions League double this season.

They are two points clear of Manchester City domestically and face a quarter-final with Porto on the European front.

The summer transfer window could see Jurgen Klopp strengthen his team further.

Liverpool fans are desperate to see their team become serial title challengers and that could lead to reinforcements.

A piece of news might have alerted Klopp ahead of the summer window.

According to L’Equipe, Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane is considering his future following the reappointment of Zinedine Zidane.

French football writer Jeremy Smith has previously stated that the £140k-a-week defender (Total Sportek) could become the first €100million defender.

Varane has played 268 times for Madrid, whilst he has 54 France caps to his name also.

News of a potential desire to leave should alert Liverpool.

In Virgil van Dijk they have arguably the best defender on current form in world football.

Next time is where a minor problem lies, however.

Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez have all filled in at times this season. It is a reasonable suggestion, however, that none of those are what would be considered elite players in world football.

Gomez has potential and can go far but the other two are towards the back end of their careers.

If Liverpool were to sign just one player during the summer it should be Varane.

His presence alongside the powerful Dutchman would see Klopp get himself a dream central defensive pairing.

It would also show the rest of Europe that Liverpool mean business on all fronts.
