Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has told Marca that his former club has the potential to win the double this season.
The Reds are still in contention for a Premier League and Champions League double after last night’s 4-1 win over Porto.
The Spaniard could actually have a say in whether or not Jurgen Klopp gets his hands on both trophies. His Newcastle United side face the Reds in the penultimate game of the season.
Benitez was the incumbent at Anfield between 2004 and 2010 and believes Liverpool are in with a great shout of success this season.
He told Marca: “Klopp is doing a great job at Anfield. They are in that position because they deserve it.
“Last weekend I watched the game against Chelsea and they play with an intensity and an impressive level.
“They are a clear contender to win both titles and have the potential to do it.”
Benitez was a successful Liverpool boss, famously winning the Champions League in Istanbul back in 2005.
These comments will further enhance the affection between Liverpool supporters and Benitez. The bond is pretty special between the parties and he clearly still has a soft spot.
As the ultimate professional, however, you can bet that Benitez won’t be going easy on Liverpool when they meet in a couple of weeks.
The Spaniard will want to finish on a high for the sake of the Magpies fans and Liverpool will still need to be at their best to get a result.
He is right though, the Reds squad is one that boasts great potential to go and win both titles this season.
It remains to be seen which, if any, they lay claim to.
