Liverpool player responds as England presenter shares what Raheem Sterling told him behind the scenes
England presenter Josh Denzel claims Raheem Sterling told him behind the scenes that Jordan Henderson is one of the “meanest” players on the pitch. The Liverpool skipper is known for his incredible leadership and vocal approach. He responded on the latest episode of the Lions Den.
Henderson, who turns 31 this week, has fought back from a long-term injury to be fit for the European Championships. He played 45 minutes against Romania and was on the bench during England’s 1-0 win over Croatia. He was the latest player to take to the Lions Den on Tuesday.
An official England programme, presenter Denzel asked Liverpool ace Henderson about a claim Sterling had told him. Denzel says that Sterling thinks his former Liverpool teammate is different off the pitch to on it – labelling Henderson “one of the meanest”. Henderson agreed.
“Raz told me that you’re one of the nicest guys off the pitch, but one of the meanest on it. Is that true?” Denzel said. Henderson replied: “To be honest, I can imagine not many liking me on the pitch. People that have played against me probably don’t like me. I’m very different off and on the pitch.”
Will Liverpool star Henderson get game time with England, following Sterling comments?
Sometimes you need a bit of nastiness. Looking at the England side, that mean streak is lacking. Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice and Mason Mount were all excellent against Croatia and while they are physical and will put a tackle in – sometimes a Henderson is needed. Perhaps, he plays on Friday.
Match fitness is tricky to generate during a tournament. Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, David Beckham and plenty of others have been included in England squads when not fit – and struggled. Harry Maguire is in a similar boat at the moment. Henderson seems as though he might get a chance.
