Liverpool youngster Neco Williams could be in line for Champions League debut

The 18-year-old has posted a Tweet which could suggest he is close to taking his European bow.

Liverpool youngster Neco Williams looks set to be part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad when the Reds face Red Bull Salzburg tonight in the Champions League.

The reigning champions can still be dumped out of the competition. If they lose at the Red Bull Arena it would be extremely likely that they would make an early exit.

To lose and stay in they would need Genk to beat Napoli, or somehow still score four goals, as that would give them the edge on Salzburg when it came to the head-t0-head.

Klopp will have three points in his sights, however, to avoid any unnecessary permutations.

Academy starlet Williams has dropped a broad hint on social media that he will be part of the travelling party:

The 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

He is yet to feature in the Premier League or Champions League yet, however, and if he does so this evening it would represent a real baptism of fire.

Williams operates primarily at right-back, although he can play further forward.

He has been a regular this season for the under-19 outfit in their UEFA Youth League campaign.

Last time out the young guns thumped Napoli 7-0 and Williams registered two assists from right-back.

Opportunity

Klopp has shown this season that he isn’t afraid to blood the younger talent at the football club.

Curtis Jones was handed his league debut at Bournemouth on Saturday and Harvey Elliott has been on the bench in recent weeks.

Williams could be the next in line and it remains to be seen whether Trent Alexander-Arnold will earn a rest, or whether Williams will settle for a place on the bench.
