Liverpool must be cautious in allowing promising Pedro Chirivella to depart

Despite impressing in pre-season, having featured as recently as Saturday when Liverpool saw off Manchester United, midfielder Pedro Chirivella’s time on Merseyside appears to be coming to an end.

The Liverpool Echo claim that a deal has been agreed with Rosenborg, worth £2.4 million, potentially rising to £3.5 million with add-ons, for the 21-year-old to move to Norway.

The club’s Sporting Director is former Liverpool defender Stig Inge Bjornebye and he appears to have got a great deal for the Spaniard, who joined from Valencia in 2013 and still has two years remaining on his contract at Anfield.

With five first team appearances under his belt, Chirivella has long been highly rated at the club and, as such, the club must be cautious when proceeding in allowing him to depart.

“Pedro Chirivella in the No 6, a fantastic football player.”

Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for him after Saturday’s win over Manchester United.

Reports suggest that the club would insist on a buy-back clause which would be available for the first three seasons Chirivella spends at his new club and that would be a wise move given his potential and a desire to avoid cases with fellow Spaniards such as Suso and Luis Alberto of young players leaving Liverpool for abroad to go on and fulfill their potential.

A player with incredible technique and strength in the middle of the park, Chirivella may well have been an interesting back-up option to have in the squad but with the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and more all able to fill in the defensive role in a three man midfield, his chances would have been limited.

Given his potential for future success, only future will tell if the decision to sell has come too soon for this midfielder. With a buy-back clause in place though, Liverpool have already guaranteed their insurance policy.
