Liverpool missed out on a gem in Lucas Paqueta

Liverpool appear to have slept on a gem in Lucas Paqueta.

The midfielder signed for AC Milan from Flamengo in January in a £30.6 million deal (ESPN), after reports last summer had claimed that a deal was in place.

Paqueta has started off extremely brightly for the Rossoneri. He has already made five starts in the league and a further three cup appearances and has scored one goal and registered an assist.

They are by no means jaw-dropping statistics, but Paqueta has been shining under Gennaro Gattuso (indicated by an early average match rating of 7.09 via WhoScored).

He has already forged a frightening understanding with fellow new signing Krzysztof Piatek, and could really soon start to realise his vast potential in a European top five league.

According to Reuters, Paqueta has ‘brought some spark’ to a previously underperforming midfield, and also given a ‘cutting edge’.

A missed opportunity for Liverpool?

For one reason or another, the Reds seemingly never made a play for Paqueta, who was being dubbed as an alternative signing to Nabil Fekir.

Liverpool may now come to regret not moving for the talented Brazilian, especially if they finish the season without a trophy to their name.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in a good position to win the 2018/19 Premier League title, but his midfield is arguably the weakest area of his squad and perhaps Paqueta could have strengthened the team.
