Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson underlined his importance as captain on Tuesday night in the 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich.

The Reds were held to a goalless draw at Anfield in the first leg of a last-16 Champions League tie, as two European heavyweights collided.

It was a tight contest that saw both teams just lack the cutting edge in front of goal on the night, but a compelling match up between two in-form sides.

With the absence of key defender Virgil Van Dijk, it was Liverpool ace Jordan Henderson who really stepped up as a leader on the pitch.

The 28-year-old was absolutely everywhere to try disrupt the Bayern midfield and proved his class on the big stage.

Henderson does sometimes divide opinion and has his share of critics, but he stood out from his Liverpool teammates in midweek.

The England international was extremely industrious on the ball and played some excellent passes, including one that sent Mohamed Salah through on goal.

He was also busy defensively and set the tone for his team with their back to goal.

Liverpool do have plenty of midfield options within their group and manager Jurgen Klopp does rotate fairly frequently, but Henderson showed why he often starts the elite fixtures.
