James Milner has thrown his backing behind Curtis Jones, after the Liverpool midfielder was replaced at half-time against Ajax in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp opted to hook the 19-year-old at the break in Amsterdam, sending out Jordan Henderson for the second half.

Jones had been handed a start by Klopp for his very first appearance in the Champions League, but he was replaced for tactical reasons according to the manager after the game.

He said (quoted by the Mirror): “He’s a very good player. I’m sure it will be the first of many. He didn’t know he was playing until quite late yesterday.

“He’s a very good player. Thought he did well.

“It was no reflection on him coming off at half-time. I’m sure it will be the first of many, many European nights for him because he’s a top top player.”
