Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has said the Reds are barely training at the moment, as injury problems mount at the club.

Jurgen Klopp has had a nightmare this season in terms of player fitness.

Many of his first-team stars have had some kind of injury, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez the two long-term absentees.

Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip and Fabinho are now back, but the German is still without Trent Alexander-Arnold, James Milner, Thiago and Xherdan Shaqiri, with Alisson the latest player to be sidelined.

One man who hasn’t had any issues so far is £25 million signing Wijnaldum (BBC Sport), who has claimed the demanding nature of the 2020/21 season means the squad are hardly training now.

He told the Dutch press (relayed by Voetbal Nieuws): “I don’t really have anything to complain about. I am blessed to stay fit during this period.

“I hope I can hold on until the end of the season. That’s going to be very difficult, but I’m confident.

“It’s really just playing matches and resting at the moment. There’s not really any training because there’s not a lot of time for that.”

TBR’s View – Players need protecting as games come thick and fast

With games arriving every few days for teams in European competitions, things are certainly hectic right now.

But to learn that there is hardly any training going on at Liverpool is still somewhat surprising.

It just goes to show how quick the turnarounds are at the moment, and there is clearly feeling that holding full training sessions will not be beneficial to the players right now.
