Liverpool drew 2-2 on Saturday with fierce rivals Everton but the big disappointment from the game came in the injury picked up by defender Virgil van Dijk.

It has now been confirmed that the Dutchman will be out for several months after suffering damage to his anterior cruciate ligament during a robust challenge by Jordan Pickford.

The defender has been a revelation for Liverpool since his arrival in January 2018, barely missing a game in over two years at Anfield and helping the club to Premier League and Champions League glory.

Following news that Van Dijk will now spend several months out injured, midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has taken to Instagram to wish the centre-back a speedy recovery.

Wijnaldum and his teammates clearly recognise what a massive loss Van Dijk will be for Liverpool’s aspirations of retaining their Premier League title.

The centre-back has played 130 games for the Reds and has quickly become one of the best defenders in the world during his time at Anfield.

Interestingly, an injury to Van Dijk might make Liverpool pleased they didn’t sell Wijnaldum in the summer.

The £75k-a-week performer was a target for Barcelona and with Fabinho now likely to become a third choice central defender, it will mean Wijnaldum remains important in the midfield area.

Following Van Dijk’s cruel injury some have been quick to rule Liverpool out of the title race and it will certainly be interesting to see how they cope in his absence.

Former Manchester City and current Bayern Munich player Jerome Boateng also took time out to send Van Dijk some best wishes.

He posted a message on Twitter, backing the defender to come back stronger.
