Liverpool boss rules out summer signing of Napoli star

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled out the £60 million summer signing of Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne, according to The Mirror.

The Italian has scored 13 goals and contributed seven assists for Carlo Ancelotti’s team this season and The Guardian had speculated that Liverpool might be keen.

The Reds are still in the hunt for a Premier League and Champions League double this season. That didn’t stop journalists asking about any potential summer plans during his Thursday press conference.

Klopp was quoted in The Mirror: “We will not sign Lorenzo Insigne. He is a very good player but he has a long-term contract with Napoli. We will not even try it.”

Despite appearing to dismiss the Insigne move, Klopp did drop a hint that he might pursue other signings in the signing.

He continued: “We will try to improve the team always. We will try it always in training, I think that is the best way to do it. Our plans are not for the public, that’s how it is.”

TBR Verdict

Klopp wouldn’t be the first manager to rule out a signing and then go and land the said player in the future. He does, however, seem adamant on this one.

Insigne wouldn’t really represent great value for money for £60 million either. His record this season is alright, but he hasn’t exactly set Serie A alight.

Liverpool need players who can come straight into the first eleven. The squad is well stocked with fringe players and any signings that are made must be ready to automatically claim a shirt.

The 27-year-old isn’t as prolific as Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino or Mohamed Salah so Klopp is probably right to steer clear of this one.
