Reported Liverpool target Diogo Jota had a soft spot for one of Merseyside’s teams when he was a youngster – it wasn’t the Anfield side, though, but rather their rivals Everton.
Just hours after the Reds secured the signing of Thiago Alcantara on Friday, speculation emerged linking the Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker with the Premier League champions.
Now, it looks as though Jota is on his way to Liverpool, with the likes of BBC Sport reporting on Saturday that the Reds have agreed a £41million deal that could rise to £45million with add-ons.
The 23-year-old has been a crucial player for Wolves since his initial loan switch from Atletico Madrid in 2017, made permanent for 14million Euros (£12.7million) the following year.
To date, Jota has made 131 competitive appearances in the old gold, registering 44 goals and 19 assists, but is yet to feature this season.
He left Molineux before kickoff against Stoke in the League Cup in midweek, according to Sky Sports, and was an unused substitute in the 2-0 Premier League win at Sheffield United.
While Jota now looks set to play for the red half of the city, Everton fans will surely love to hear what he said about the Toffees in an interview with The Guardian earlier this year.
“I loved to watch Everton play, especially when they were playing at home,” he said.
“It was not a club that fought for the title but that always made life very complicated for the big teams. And I loved that drive and competitiveness. They were relentless.”
Jota has shown he is one of the Premier League’s brightest talents and, at just 23 years old, the Portugal international is only just getting started for club and country.
With great pace, vision and ability to carry the ball and commit defenders, not to mention superb passing and shooting skills, the £45,000-a-week ace is surely destined for a top club.
It looks as though Liverpool will be that top club, but nonetheless, Everton fans will probably enjoy knowing that the player had a soft spot for them rather than the Reds.
