Liverpool are a point behind their rivals, and can win the title if they beat Wolves and City get held by the Seagulls.

Whatever transpires though, Liverpool’s progress from last year is clear for all to see.

Jurgen Klopp, with the help of club officials, bought superbly last summer with Alisson and Fabinho the particular standouts.

Speaking on ESPN FC, former Reds defender Nicol urged the German to snap up promising Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, who cost £24 million last summer from Norwich City (Leicester Mercury).

He said: “He can open defences up, he can create chances. I think he will eventually score more goals than he is doing right now.

“I would love to see this. It would be a little change in the way that Klopp operated. But I think this would be a great signing.”

Nicol then commented on the prospect of his old club signing Declan Rice and was less enthusiastic about that particularly idea.

He added: “Declan Rice would have been ideal before they signed Fabinho. I just see Declan Rice as being the same as Fabinho.

“It’s good to have a great squad, as Man City will attest to, but I’m not sure that he’s better than Fabinho.”

TBR’s view

Maddison is a great player and is promise is clear for everyone to see, but Liverpool have many attacking midfield options at present for players would need to be sold first.

Fabinho has made the holding midfield role is own this term, and arguably Liverpool don’t need someone like Rice, with Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum also able to operate there if required.
