Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher issues verdict on Thiago Alcantara as he nears Anfield move

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on Thiago Alcantara ahead of his move to Anfield, as quoted by Metro.

As reported by the likes of Sky Sports, the Reds have agreed a deal to sign the Bayern Munich midfielder for at least £20m, plus £5m in add-ons, on a four-year contract, and he’s set to arrive on Merseyside today.

While Liverpool are yet to announce the deal, Hansi Flick told a press conference on Thursday – as reported by The Mirror – that he “can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.”

Though Liverpool won the Premier League by a huge margin in 2019-20, only Kostas Tsimikas has officially been added to their ranks during the current transfer window so far.

The Reds are currently well stocked in midfield, but Carragher reckons Thiago will bring something different to the squad.

“Liverpool have got five or six midfield players – they rotate well because they need energy in that position – but a lot of the players are pretty similar,” Carragher is quoted by Metro as saying.

“Thiago would be something different – less in energy but more technical – and I think he would be a really good addition.

“Liverpool are world-class at the top end of the pitch, world-class in terms of their defence and goalkeeper; I think they’re top-class in midfield.

“Something could be added technically and Thiago fits the bill, so fingers crossed he comes.”

TBR View:

Aside from Thiago’s world-class talent and glittering CV, he is an incredibly versatile player who is just as good in holding midfield, central / box-to-box and attacking midfield.

As good as Liverpool’s midfield is, Georginio Wijnaldum is being linked with a move away, and besides, no champions should rest on their laurels when it comes to personnel.
