Liverpool: Left-back move delayed; £10 million Southampton defender wanted; race for Forest starlet

A move for reported target Sead Kolasinac will not happen before June, when the left back’s contract expires according to his current club. After the Reds pulled off a move for Joel Matip on a free transfer from the club last summer, Schalke sporting director Christian Heidl told the press:

“Nothing changed from some days ago. Sead is still on a deal with us, there’s nothing more to say about it. We want to keep him with us, he’s not going anywhere else before June.”

The club may still make a move for Kolasinac if he is available on a free deal with his contract expiring in the summer.

However, one deal which could be achieved this month is one which would see Jose Fonte become the fifth former Southampton player to join the Liverpool squad alongside the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Sadio Mane. The Mirror claim that Mamadou Sakho could be used in a deal for the Portuguese international.

The 33-year-old is valued at £10 million by the Saints with 18 months left on his existing deal having handed in a transfer request after a fall out with manager Claude Puel and has consequently been dropped by the south coast club.

The club are also believed to be leading the race for 17-year-old Nottingham Forest sensation Ben Brereton after the striker has attracted interest from much of the top half of the Premier League by scoring 15 goals in 20 games for his club’s under 23 side.

Likened in style to Anfield hero Robbie Fowler, the Reds could be at the front of the line for the forward who is said to be impressed by Jurgen Klopp’s desire to give opportunities to young players to make a breakthrough into the first team.
