After twice letting their lead slip at the Stadium of Light yesterday, manager Jurgen Klopp spoke about his side’s display against Sunderland. Whilst Klopp did not dispute either penalty decision, he did comment, saying:

“I’m sorry about my mood. I don’t look like the best loser in the world… We scored the second goal, it felt good, it felt deserved. Then I would say no foul, no free-kick. I saw it again and there was no contact. Then handball, 2-2, I must be honest it doesn’t feel good. Sunderland got a point because of two penalties. To get two! The free-kick, that was harsh and hard to accept but obviously I have to accept. If you see it again there was no contact. I saw it in the game and the fourth official saw it. It’s not the worst mistake in the world but it is so hard. Two penalties against us feels not good. Usually I like to talk about football. It is difficult today.”

Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mane were not enough as Jermain Defoe notched both penalties from 12 yards to give his side a point.

Klopp also spoke publicly to provide an update on the fitness of James Milner and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom were withdrawn with injuries, and Jordan Henderson who missed the game. He said:

“[Sturridge] had a knock on his right ankle. I don’t think it is too bad… It felt like [Milner] got a knock on this calf, but he didn’t know exactly. So we had to be really careful. That’s why we changed him… [For Henderson] hopefully it’s not too serious. The FA Cup will be difficult.”

The Reds will now be without Sadio Mane as he departs for the African Cup of Nations and are already without Philippe Coutinho and Joel Matip so will not want any more absentees.

However, there is speculation that the squad could be strengthened in January and midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum has revealed that he would love to be joined by his international teammate Quincy Promes as he explained:

“I think Quincy knows how great Liverpool is, I knew it before I came here. Of course I want him to come to Liverpool because I know he is a good player and also a good person who can help the team. I do not know if everything is true about what they say as I do not speak with him about that.”

The Spartak Moscow winger has been linked with a move to Anfield of late but it is unclear if Klopp would be keen on a January move for him.
