After a disappointing evening on the south coast saw Liverpool concede a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their tie against Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final, Jurgen Klopp explained:
“I tried already – three, four times now but I cannot make it better with whatever I say. I’m actually not used to a reaction like this from my boys. It was not good. That’s how it is but, for the final, I would think it’s open. You have two disappointed managers after the game. One because he lost and the performance wasn’t good and the other because he only won 1-0 and has to go to Anfield afterwards. We will strike back. We will be a different team. Everything will be different at Anfield. It’s still possible to go to Wembley and that’s the target.”
There were some positives for the German though, with Philippe Coutinho making a return and Loris Karius and Lucas Leiva both performing well.
However, one of those criticised for underperforming was former Saints captain Adam Lallana, who the Times claim is being chased by some of Europe’s biggest clubs. They report that Barcelona and Juventus are among the teams now joining Paris Saint-Germain in their monitoring of the England international.
Playing on the right side of attack last night, Lallana has two years remaining on his current deal at Anfield and is believed to be in talks over an extension to his current deal. The 28-year-old is thought to be keen to remain on Merseyside but a bid from one of these massive clubs may tempt him to consider his options.
The club are said to be looking at the long term too, with an £8.7 million move for Juventus’ 19-year-old prodigy Francesco Cassata reportedly being considered, according to Sky Italia. Currently on loan at second tier Ascoli, the Italy youth international has been hugely impressive.
It seems that talks are unlikely to succeed with the Turin club holding him in very high regard and not wanting to sell, but the Reds will be hoping to negotiate some kind of deal.
