Liverpool have named a 29-man squad ahead of their 2019/20 Champions League campaign with all of the usual suspects included.

The Reds won the competition last season, claiming their sixth trophy and they will fancy their chances for another title this time around.

There is one obvious omission in the Liverpool squad, however, with young Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever not included among the chosen players.

A former Ajax academy player, the centre-back is set for a bright future but on this occasion, he has been overlooked for the Champions League squad.

The list does offer some optimism on the injury front for goalkeeper Alisson Becker, however. He is named in the squad despite currently nursing a calf problem, indicating a return to fitness perhaps.

Nathaniel Clyne who is out injured with a long-term knee injury is also missing from the list.

One surprise inclusion is that of Herbie Kane. He was on loan at Doncaster Rovers last season but didn’t play a single minute of football in pre-season for Liverpool.

It is the omission of Hoever that has raised the most suspicion, however, with supporters now questioning where he may get a first-team opportunity.

There is still the domestic cup competitions for him to earn a chance to play in Jurgen Klopp’s team but that doesn’t make the Champions League exclusion any less surprising.

Here is a selection of Tweets regarding Hoever’s absence on the squad list submitted by Liverpool:
