Liverpool have reportedly watched Wigan Athletic prodigy Joe Gelhardt this season – and they’d be wise to pounce on the youngster.
The teenage sensation is doing great things at Wigan. On Wednesday night he was part of the Latics team that shocked Tottenham Hotspur by dumping them out of the FA Youth Cup.
At 17-year-old forward, he set up the second goal in a 2-0 win over the team expected to go far in this year’s tournament.
According to Goal, Liverpool are very keen on Gelhardt and it’s easy to see why.
Despite his tender years, he has been included in Paul Cook’s first-team squad on nine occasions this season.
He scored his first goal for the club against Hull back in September and recently produced an eye-catching cameo against Nottingham Forest.
Wigan are facing a fight against relegation from the Championship and at some point, Gelhardt will leave the club.
At 17 there isn’t any real rush for the youngster to seek a move and playing men’s football will only aid his development.
He is, however, exactly the sort of player that will excite Jurgen Klopp.
The left-footer can prove a real thorn in the side of opposition defenders on his day. He is flamboyant, quick and his wand of a left peg is a real asset.
Gelhardt possesses the quality to light up Anfield with an array of tricks and flicks
Liverpool have a proud history with their academy players making the grade at first-team level.
Gelhardt would be a quality addition to the youth ranks and he would be destined for first-team stardom at some point.
He has already captained the England under-18 team and the centre-forward looks destined for big things.
The longer Liverpool wait, the more other clubs will become interested in securing his services.
With Gelhardt in the news for his FA Youth Cup heroics, Klopp would be wise to pounce on the youngster now and avoid missing a trick.
