Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix has told AS that he was overwhelmed with the atmosphere inside Anfield during his side’s 3-2 Champions League win over Liverpool.
Diego Simeone’s team shocked the stadium by coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 after extra time and seal their place in the quarter-final of the competition.
Felix set up the first, all-important, away goal for Los Rojiblancos and was a menace throughout for the Liverpool defenders.
The 20-year-old was a £113 million signing for Atletico in the summer, replacing the outgoing Antoine Griezmann who signed for Barcelona.
Although he felt somewhat guilty, he couldn’t help but admire the famous Anfield atmosphere.
He told AS: “It was incredible. I shouldn’t say it, but when they scored, seeing the stadium and their way of celebrating.
“I had seen this on the television, but seeing it live and being within this great atmosphere… Hardly anyone wins here and we are so happy.”
Felix who has endured a stop-start beginning to the Atletico chapter of his career also told reporters what happened when he caught up with boss Jurgen Klopp.
He continued: “When we crossed paths I thanked him and he just gave me a big hug.”
Felix is one of the brightest youngsters in world football and many believe Atletico pulled off a real coup when they landed him.
He was constantly threatening when Madrid did break forward last night and never gave the defence a moment’s respite.
Felix has six goals and three assists to his name this season and he will hope to bump those numbers up in the final stages of the campaign.
The youngster could yet have a big say in whether or not Atletico can go on and progress even further in the Champions League.
